Near-infrared Adaptive Optics Imaging of High-redshift Quasars

چکیده
The properties of high-redshift quasar host galaxies are studied in order to investigate the connection between galaxy evolution, nuclear activity, and the formation of supermassive black holes. We combine new near-IR observations of three high-redshift quasars (2 < z < 3), obtained at the ESOVery Large Telescope equipped with adaptive optics, with selected data from the literature. For the three new objects we were able to detect and characterize the properties of the host galaxy, found to be consistent with those of massive elliptical galaxies of MR 24:7 for the one radio-loud quasar, andMR 23:8 for the two radio-quiet quasars. When combined with existing data at lower redshift, these new observations depict a scenario where the host galaxies of radio-loud quasars are seen to follow the expected trend of luminous ( 5L ) elliptical galaxies undergoing passive evolution. This trend is remarkably similar to that followed by radio galaxies at z > 1:5. Radio-quiet quasar hosts also follow a similar trend but at a lower average luminosity ( 0.5 mag dimmer). The data indicate that quasar host galaxies are already fully formed at epochs as early as 2 Gyr after the big bang and then passively fade in luminosity to the present epoch. Adaptive Optics Imaging of Low-redshift Damped Lyman-alpha Quasar Absorbers
We have carried out a high angular resolution near-infrared imaging study of the fields of 6 quasars with 7 strong absorption line systems at z < 0.5, using the Hokupa’a adaptive optics system and the QUIRC near-infrared camera on the Gemini-North telescope. These absorption systems include 4 classical damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs), 2 sub-DLAs, and one Lyman-limit system. Images were obta...
متن کاملNear - infrared imaging of the host galaxies of three radio – loud quasars at z ∼ 1
We present high spatial resolution near–infrared H-band (1.65 μm) images, taken with ISAAC on UT1 of ESO VLT, of three radio-loud quasars at z∼1.5, as a pilot study for imaging of a larger sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars in the redshift range 1 < z < 2. We are able to clearly detect the host galaxy in two quasars (PKS 0000-177 and PKS 0348-120) and marginally in the third (PKS 0402...

متن کاملRadio Sources near Bright Natural Guide Stars
We present a preliminary survey of 58 radio sources within the isoplanatic patches (r < 25′′) of bright (11 < R < 12) stars suitable for use as natural guide stars with high-order adaptive optics (AO). An optical and near-infrared imaging survey was conducted utilizing tip-tilt corrections in the optical and AO in the near-infrared. Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) were fit to the multiband...
متن کاملThe nuclear to host galaxy relation of high redshift quasars
We present near-infrared imaging obtained with ESO VLT+ISAAC of the host galaxies of a sample of low luminosity quasars in the redshift range 1 < z < 2, aimed at investigating the relationship between the nuclear and host galaxy luminosities at high redshift. This work complements our previous systematic study to trace the cosmological evolution of the host galaxies of high luminosity quasars (...
